Welcome to English in Finland

This blog is produced by students in Jyväskylä and Oulu universities in the context of a course investigating the role of English language in Finland. The blog entries published here explore and discuss how English is present and visible in Finland across different spheres of life (e.g. linguistic landscapes, media and everyday interaction). We identify and explore the ways in which English and Anglophone culture(s) are visible and represented in public contexts and the media in Finland, how people adopt and adapt resources provided by the English language into their own discourse, how English enters their everyday lives, and how English is used in Finland in different discursive and social contexts. Our aim is to figure out how English impacts Finnish culture and language, and how Finnish and English exist and are used side by side.

This page contains blogs and longer essays on three different sub-themes:

  1. Exploring Linguistic Landscapes in Finland
  2. Exploring English in Finnish Media or Social Media Settings
  3. Exploring English in Finnish Interactional Environments
